The committee process allows for a more in-depth look at issues and can allow for public input into the legislative process through written submisions and/or public hearings.
As with most Canadian Legislatures, there are three types of committees of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
There are two Committees of the Whole Assembly; Committee of the Whole and Committee of Supply.
Standing Committees are appointed at the start of each new Legislature. In addition to Standing Committees there exists a Special Standing Committee on Members’ Services. This committee differs from the other Standing Committees in that it is traditionally chaired by the Speaker.
Select Special Committees are struck for specific purposes. When a special committee releases its report, its work is complete and the committee is disbanded unless otherwise directed by the Assembly.
