Introduction

"I am intensely proud of this beautiful and wonderful Province being called after me, and that my husband should have thought of it."
- Princess Louise Caroline Alberta1

The land area which is now called the Province of Alberta was so named in 1882 by the Governor General of Canada in honour of his wife. He was the Marquis of Lorne, and she was Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, one of Queen Victoria's daughters.

During recent years, there has been renewed interest in Princess Louise. Many Albertans wish to be better informed concerning the details of her life.
