Changes to MLA remuneration effective April 1
Edmonton—Following from an October 5, 1998 decision of the Special Select Committee on Members' Services, components of MLA remuneration are adjusted annually on April 1. The adjustment is based on the percentage increase or decrease for the previous calendar year as reported by Statistics Canada in the Average Weekly Earnings for Alberta.
This year's change in remuneration was calculated based on a reported 5.23 per cent increase in the Average Weekly Earnings. On April 1, 2005, the adjustment was 3.17 per cent.
Beginning April 1, Alberta MLAs will receive $71,244 compared to $67,698 last year. The attached fact sheet provides a summary of MLA remuneration and committee allowances. The attached tables summarize compensation adjustments from 1989 to the present, as well as a comparison of levels in Canadian jurisdictions.Further information can be found on the Legislative Assembly website at www.assembly.ab.ca
