Mr. Johnson was elected to his first term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Athabasca-Redwater on March 3, 2008. In addition to his regular duties as an MLA he serves as a member of the Treasury Board, the Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing Committee, the Public Accounts Committee and the Standing Committee on Community Services.
Mr. Johnson has had a varied career. Sport and recreation have played an important role in his life as he has coached and trained hockey players at the junior, college and pro levels. He has also coached at two world championships (c Pool) and is a past co-ordinator of the Viking Cup international hockey tournament. He has experience working in financial markets as a futures trading floor pit boss and as a salesperson for life insurance and related investment funds. For the last 16 years he has owned and operated several small businesses.
Prior to being elected, Mr. Johnson was the president and owner of Xpert Office Solutions, the largest rural Xerox Sales Agency in western Canada, supplying a variety of technology solutions to customers in northern Alberta. While operating this business for the last 10 years, he was awarded the Xerox Canada Agent of the Year three times and appointed as one of six members to the National Agent Council for Xerox Canada.
Mr. Johnson has a bachelor of arts in psychology from Camrose Lutheran College (Augustana Faculty, U of A) and continues to be an active member of his community as part of the following organizations:
- Athabasca Missionary Church
- Athabasca Rotary Club
- Athabasca Youth Justice Committee member
Additionally, Mr. Johnson has taught Sunday school, coached high school football and minor hockey and has had extensive international travel.
He and his wife, Kim, who is an Art Therapist, along with their two sons and daughter live in Athabasca.
