Guy Boutilier was elected to his fourth term as the MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo. In addition to his regular duties as MLA Mr. Boutilier is a member of the Standing Committee on Resources and Environment.
Previously he served as Minister of International, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Relations, Minister of Environment and Minister of Municipal Affairs.
After his first election to the provincial Legislature on March 11, 1997, Mr. Boutilier chaired the SPC on Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection. He also chaired the Cabinet Committee on Climate Change and the Northern Alberta Development Council.
Mr. Boutilier brings a combination of academic, private and public service experience to the Legislature. His academic accomplishments include a masters degree in public administration from Harvard University in Cambridge-Boston, Massachusetts. He holds a bachelors degree in business administration from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and an education degree with honours from Saint Marys University in Halifax.
For eight years Mr. Boutilier was a college instructor, teaching business management courses at Keyano College in Fort McMurray. He has also worked as a financial analyst in the oil industry and lectures at the University of Albertas School of Business.
Mr. Boutilier was a member of Fort McMurrays city council for 11 years, serving two terms as an alderman and two terms as Fort McMurrays youngest city mayor. The most significant accomplishment of his tenure as mayor was to form and chair the Fort McMurray Stakeholders Group with the co-operation of local governments, aboriginals, industry, hospitals, schools and the college. Collectively the group examined better ways to serve the regions citizens while reducing the cost of government. The end result was Albertas first rural-urban amalgamation into the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo, the largest municipality in North America, spanning 69,000 square kilometres, and Albertas 3rd largest city.
Mr. Boutilier has received a number of awards and distinctions. The International Association of Business Communicators selected him as the Top Communicator of the Year. He also received the Award of Excellence from the board of directors of the AUMA (Alberta Urban Municipalities Association).
Mr. Boutilier has been extremely active in the community, having served on numerous boards and commissions. He is a member of the Oil Sands Rotary Club, the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, the Fort McMurray Shrine Club and chair of the Fort McMurray Diabetes Association. In his spare time he enjoys coaching minor league sports. His hockey team won the international championship at the Quebec World PeeWee AA hockey tournament.
Mr. Boutilier and his wife, Gail, reside in Fort McMurray. They are the proud parents of their 2 year old son Marc.
