Poppy Presentation at the Legislature

As part of its national poppy campaign, the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta- Northwest Territories Command presents poppies to the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker, MLAs and students in the Legislature Building rotunda every year. It is an incredibly rich ceremony, complete with the Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party, a piper and poppies for everyone in attendance. Teachers are encouraged to bring their students to the Legislature to attend this event.

Service of Remembrance at the Legislature

The annual Remembrance Service, hosted by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, includes participation by members of the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Salvation Army. Wreaths are laid on behalf of the Members of the Legislative Assembly, the Youth of Alberta and the Corps of Commissionaires, among others. This occasion marks an important time of reflection and gratitude for the peace we enjoy in Canada today. School groups are encouraged to attend the service as a part of their visit to the Legislature. Dates and times are posted annually on the Public Information section of the website.

School Choir Performances

Each year students from across Alberta book a visit and bring their festive spirit to the Legislature with their gift of song, performed on the grand staircase of the Legislature Building rotunda. Performances are held during the lunch hour and evenings, with free hot chocolate offered to the public during the evening performances.

Regional Historica Fair – Legislative Assembly Award

Historica

Do your students have an interest in history? Is your class involved in the annual Edmonton Regional Historica Fair? The Legislative Assembly offers a special award at the Edmonton Regional Historica Fair, held in the Legislature pedway, to recognize a student or students who create an outstanding project that celebrates Alberta’s parliamentary democracy. Encourage your students to explore the people and events that contributed to Alberta’s legislative history.

Winners will receive a certificate from the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and will be introduced to the Members in the Legislature Chamber, along with their teacher and parents. The students also receive a gift certificate redeemable at the Legislative Assembly Gift Shop.

Winner of 2010 Legislative Assembly Award

The winner of the 2010 Regional Historica Fair Legislative Assembly Award was Wendy Dyjur of Vital Grandin School in St. Albert. On November 18, 2010 she was awarded a certificate from the Speaker of the Legislature Assembly for her project, “Member of the Legislature Assembly”. Wendy visited the Legislature with her family and was introduced to the Members of the Legislative Assembly in the Assembly Chamber.
