Family Day at the Alberta Legislature Celebrates 100 Years of Democracy
Edmonton—This Family Day join the celebrations as Alberta’s Legislative Assembly approaches its 100th Anniversary. March 15, 2006, marks 100 years of Democracy in Alberta and the Legislative Assembly wants to invite Albertans to an early celebration. Bundle up your loved-ones and come down to the Alberta Legislature grounds on February 20 between noon and 4 p.m. to take in a variety of free events that are sure to add up to a great day.
“Family Day is the Kick-off to 100 Years of Democracy in Alberta,” said Speaker Kowalski. “Come down to the Legislature grounds to share in the celebrations.”
Kick-off your day of fun with a wagon ride around the vast Legislature grounds which will feature a series of banners honouring Alberta’s past Premiers and Speakers. After that, mosey over to the ice sculpture display or the skating rink for continued family fun.
If those little toes get cold, just head inside the pedway for free hot chocolate and great Alberta entertainment courtesy of Cooper Studios. Watch the smiles magically appear as Kent Wong the Traveling Magician pulls a rabbit out of his hat and transforms balloons into your child’s favourite animal.
Our craft table is sure to keep little hands and big imaginations busy, and since kids of every age love to play dress up, your little ones are sure to enjoy playing the part of the Speaker or an MLA with the Interpretive Centre’s Mock Legislature education program.
Of course no Family Day at the Legislature would be complete without the ever-popular mascots and wait . . . who’s that over there? It’s Sir Oliver Owl! Be sure to stop by and say hello to our feathered friend the Great Horned Owl from the Alberta Society for the Birds of Prey.
Oh, and to satisfy the adult in you, tours of the majestic Legislature Building will run every 10 minutes between noon and 3:30 p.m.For more information about Family Day at the Legislature, call Visitor Services at (780) 427-7362 or check out the website at www.assembly.ab.ca
