Ceremonial and Security Services (CSS) is responsible for providing security services to the Legislative Assembly, Legislature Building, Queen Elizabeth II Building, constituency offices and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) residences. In addition, CSS is responsible for planning and executing the ceremonial functions for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and managing the Alberta Legislative Assembly Page program.

The Security Services Assistant serves as a front-line representative, projecting a positive image of the ceremonial and security team while providing administrative and operational support related to security services. A focus on client service, administrative support and excellent use of judgment is key to providing effective services to CSS’s clients.

This is a nonpartisan position that operates in a dynamic political environment. This position also interacts with the legislative session and, on occasion, requires additional hours during sessional days.

Contribute to an engaged workplace

In this role you will be one of the first points of contact for employees and MLAs to report security-related incidents, gather information and provide on-the-spot advice. Using your exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, you will de-escalate situations and communicate instructions clearly while keeping the security leadership team informed.

Working with the Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms, you will use your organizational skills to administer the constituency office alarm program throughout Alberta, including coordinating installations, troubleshooting difficulties and reporting on information from the system.

This position is responsible for creating and processing security access cards, House precinct passes and key requests for LAO staff and spaces in addition to providing strong administrative support to the CSS branch.

Your background includes a postsecondary degree/diploma in business administration, emergency communications and response or a related field and a minimum of two years of related experience, and equivalencies will be considered.

You are a highly organized, detail-oriented professional with a passion for teamwork, communication and continuous improvement. Your excellent interpersonal skills allow you to approach situations with strong judgment and tact.

To be successful in this role, a good understanding of security and emergency procedures and best practices is required along with a high level of resiliency allowing you to deal with highly sensitive or emotional issues.
