Category: Events Notices

EDMONTON –   "The Holodomor was a dark time in the world’s history, and it is important to honour the victims, even now,” said the Honourable Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. “When we remember these atrocities, we renew our vow to stand united against future genocide and oppression.” Speaker McIver will host a memorial ceremony on Tuesday, November 18, at noon, to pay homage to the victims of the Holodomor.

The Holodomor was a Soviet government-engineered famine that occurred in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933, resulting in millions of people starving to death. In Alberta, the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day Act, received Royal Assent on November 4, 2008. The Act proclaims the fourth Saturday in November of each year as Holodomor Day in Alberta.

The ceremony is open to the public and remarks will be brought by the Honourable Andrew Boitchenko and Mr. Naheed Nenshi, and other community members.

The ceremony will be live streamed on assembly.ab.ca, the Legislative Assembly’s X (Twitter), Facebook and YouTube channels.
