EDMONTON – “The joyful celebration of Hanukkah has taken place for over 2000 years. Here in Alberta, the legislature has hosted a celebration since 1992, lighting the first two gas lanterns of a seven-metre-high menorah on the Legislature grounds,” said Honourable Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. “We continue to honour the Jewish tradition and faith, and to showcase the strength and vibrancy of Alberta’s Jewish communities.”
On Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 4:30 p.m., Speaker McIver will host a ceremony in the Alberta Legislature rotunda in celebration of Hanukkah.
Following Speaker McIver’s opening remarks, the Honourable Andrew Boitchenko will speak on behalf of the Premier and Government of Alberta, followed by Mr. Lorne Dach on behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.
Greetings will also be delivered on behalf of the City of Edmonton from His Worship, Mayor Andrew Knack and Member of Parliament for Edmonton West, Kelly McCauley. After remarks from several platform guests as well as musical performances by Anton and the Talmud Torah choir, Rabbi Ari Drelich will deliver a holiday message.
Following the ceremony in the Legislature rotunda, Alberta’s largest menorah will be lit to mark the beginning of Hannukah - the eight-day festival of lights.
