Legislative Assembly Welcomes the Lunar New Year on February 24

EDMONTON – Speaker Ric McIver will host a celebration of Lunar New Year and usher in the Year of the Horse in the Legislature rotunda on Tuesday, February 24, at noon.
“Lunar New Year is an ancient celebration but the deep-rooted values are more relevant today than ever,” said Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. “Together with our Asian-Albertan communities we celebrate unity, good fortune and strength and look forward to a new year filled with optimism.”
Lunar New Year is a major cultural celebration observed across many Asian communities. It marks the beginning of the new year based on the lunar calendar and is traditionally a time to welcome good fortune, health and prosperity.
Official remarks will be delivered by:
- Her Honour the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
- Peter Singh, MLA for Calgary-East (on behalf of the Premier of Alberta)
- Naheed Nenshi, MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona (Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition)
- Madame Liying Zhao, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China
- Lily Wang, President of the Association for Unity in Diversity
The event will also include performances by students from Lillian Osborne High School. A light reception to follow.
The public are invited to attend in person and use the Legislature Building’s ground-level west entrance. On-site parking is limited. The event will be live streamed at assembly.ab.ca and on the Legislative Assembly’s Facebook, X and YouTube channels.
