Celebrate Canada Day at the Legislature – 100 Years of Democracy
Edmonton—“Alberta’s Legislature is the place to be on Canada Day as Alberta’s Legislative Assembly continues its 100 Years of Democracy celebrations,” said Hon. Ken Kowalski, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. “We are most excited to invite Albertans to celebrate our country and at the same time share in some of the initiatives that we have taken to honour our province.”
Food, fun and a variety of family entertainment will be featured throughout the Legislature Grounds July 1 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. As well the Legislature Building and pedway will once again welcome thousands to its open house. Table officers and tour guides dressed in 1905 period costumes will greet guests as they walk the Chamber floor, and kids of all ages will take delight in all the Canada Day kids’ activities, such as face painting, balloon animals and bouncing castles. Free entertainment throughout the day will feature music, dance and magic performances.
Some new attractions this year include a series of banners commemorating Alberta’s past Premiers and Speakers on the south Legislature Grounds, and a collection of plaques documenting Alberta’s history from pre-settlement to the present day along the walls of Members’ Way in the south Legislature pedway.
As in the past, guests can enter a Canada Day draw to win free passes to various attractions such as Fort Edmonton Park, the Valley Zoo, Muttart Conservatory, John Janzen Nature Centre, the Telus World of Science centre, the Devonian Botanic Gardens, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and Reynolds - Alberta Museum. In addition, a few lucky families will win a copy of 100 Years at the Legislative Assembly of Alberta – A Centennial Celebration coffee table book.
The Legislative Assembly is partnering with the Edmonton Celebrate Canada committee, which offers a variety of family-related activities throughout the city.Canada Day Festivities
