Brooks Arcand-Paul was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-West Henday on May 29, 2023.
Prior to serving with the Legislative Assembly, he was the in-house legal counsel for the Alexander First Nation in Treaty Six territory of Alberta. MLA Arcand-Paul held Associate positions at MLT Aikins (Edmonton) and Eagle Law Group (Tsuut’ina Nation).
Before taking a position as a summer student with the Attorney General of Ontario (Toronto), MLA Arcand-Paul worked as a research assistant at Alexander First Nation and as an officer with Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta in First Nations education.
He founded the National Indigenous Law Students’ Association in 2016, and held the positions of secretary, treasurer and vice-president as a student representative at the Indigenous Bar Association in Canada between 2014 to 2022. More recently, he volunteered with the Alexander First Nation working on law development until 2019.
MLA Arcand-Paul has received both the Aboriginal Role Models of Alberta Award, and the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Medal, in 2016 and 2022 respectively.
He was born at the Charles Camsell Hospital (the old “Indian hospital”) in Edmonton, Alberta and holds both a bachelor of arts from the University of Alberta and a juris doctor degree from the University of Ottawa.
MLA Arcand-Paul is a member of the Alexander First Nation and the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and his traditional name bestowed on him after his birth is Sîpîysis. He and his partner Jason are proud dads to Jake, their golden retriever, and uncles and godfathers to many nieces and nephews.
He was the 955th Member to be sworn into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
