What will Parliaments look like 110 years from now?

Join youth from around the globe in answering this question and earn a chance to win fun prizes! Alberta youth 18 years of age and younger are invited to share their creative vision for the future of the parliamentary system through an original essay, video or work of art. The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is hosting the CPA Youth Creativity Competition to mark its 110th anniversary. The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, along with a judging panel, will shortlist the entries from Alberta for submission to the CPA.

Two Chances to WIN!

The CPA will award GBP £100 (approximately CAD $170) in gift vouchers to the winner of each age category: 11 and under, 12 to 14 and 15 to 18! The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta will also award an Apple iPad to three lucky entrants from Alberta who make the short list. Call it an Alberta Incentive! All Alberta entrants receive a participation certificate from the Speaker.

Alberta Incentive Contest Rules

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (“CPA”) Youth Creativity Competition 2021 - Alberta Incentive (“Contest”) will run from 9 a.m. on July 19, 2021 (MST) to 11:59 p.m. on September 10, 2021 (MST).  The Contest is organized by the Legislative Assembly Office (“LAO”).

No purchase required. To enter the Contest, entrants must make an electronic submission, along with a completed application form to the Office of the Speaker. All submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. on September 10, 2021 (MST). Only one submission per entrant will be accepted.

The Contest is open to residents of Alberta 18 years of age or younger, who are citizens of a Commonwealth country, including Canada.

Entrants who are younger than 18 years of age must have the permission of their parent or guardian before making a submission to the Contest, including consent to all Contest rules. Entrants agree to the LAO holding the materials and personal information included in their submission for the purpose of the Contest, in accordance with section 33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, after which all materials and personal information will be deleted.

The LAO will provide full credit to entrants for their submissions but will not publish the names of winners without the express permission of the entrant or, in the case of an entrant younger than 18 years of age, their parent or guardian.

Submissions must be original and created entirely by the entrant.

Submissions are accepted in English only.

By entering the Contest, entrants grant to the LAO the authorization and licence to reproduce, broadcast, publish, distribute, represent in public, edit and modify their submission, without further compensation beyond the participation in the Contest, including use on the Legislative Assembly of Alberta website, social media websites (e.g. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), photo- and video-sharing websites (e.g. YouTube) and in printed materials.

Submissions to the Contest will be reviewed by a panel that will include the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and nine (9) other individuals selected from a variety of backgrounds from different areas within the LAO. The panel will review the submissions received, which will be judged on originality, creativity and a demonstrated understanding of what a Parliament/Legislature is and why it is important.

Up to four (4) submissions may be selected by the panel from each of the following entrant categories to be forwarded to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Headquarters Secretariat in London, United Kingdom, to compete in the international Youth Creativity Competition 2021:

  • Infant Group (0 to 11 years)
  • Junior Group (12 to 14 years)
  • Senior Group (15 to 18 years)

Submissions selected to compete in the international competition are subject to the CPA’s submission guidelines, which may be reviewed on the CPA international Youth Creativity Competition 2021 website.

One (1) winner will be selected for the best submission received in Alberta in each of the following entrant categories:

  • Infant Group (0 to 11 years)
  • Junior Group (12 to 14 years)
  • Senior Group (15 to 18 years)

Winners will receive an Apple iPad (approximate retail value of $500 (“Prize”).

Prize winners will be declared the first week of October, subject to compliance with the Contest rules. The LAO will contact each Prize winner within approximately two (2) business days.

Inability to reach the selected entrant or failure of the selected entrant to respond to the notification within five (5) business days of an attempt by the LAO or failure to provide proof of eligibility will cause the selected entrant to be disqualified and forfeit the Prize.
