Speaker Statement: Recognizing the 150-year Anniversary of the Signing of Treaty 6

Category: Notices

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6.

I extend my best wishes to the Treaty 6 Nations and to all those marking this important milestone. Today is an opportunity to reflect on the Treaty’s history and continued significance, and on the importance of relationships grounded in understanding and respect.

Signed in 1876, Treaty 6 continues to shape the relationship between First Nations and the Crown, and remains relevant to the people who live and work on these lands today.

As Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, I am mindful that our Assembly gathers on Treaty 6 territory. In recognition of this, the Standing Orders of the Assembly include a land acknowledgement that is read at the beginning of each sitting week. The acknowledgement recognizes the traditional territories and treaty lands on which Members of the Legislative Assembly carry out the work entrusted to them by the people of Alberta.

The Treaty Six Monument on the Alberta Legislature Grounds is a large replica of the Treaty medal presented to First Nations leaders at the time Treaty 6 was signed in the Edmonton area. It stands as a reminder of the significance of the treaty and the enduring relationships it represents.

The 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6 highlights the importance of continued understanding and respect in lasting relationships. My hope is that this milestone encourages everyone living in Alberta to learn more about the treaty relationship and the role it continues to play in shaping the province.
