Category: Events

EDMONTON – The Honorable Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, invites the public to celebrate Eid al-Adha on June 9, 2026 at 1 p.m. in the Alberta Legislature Building rotunda.

Muslim communities in Alberta and around the world will celebrate Eid al-Adha from May 26-30, 2026. Known as the Festival of Sacrifice, this event marks the end of the Hajj, the pilgrimage of millions of faithful Muslims to Mecca. There are over 200,000 people of Muslim faith in Alberta, who have contributed greatly to the history and the growth of our province.

“Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is a holy day for Muslims around the world,” said Speaker McIver. “It is a time to come together in prayer, to share meals, exchange gifts and serve those in need. Most importantly, it imparts lessons about giving and sacrifice – values that are important to all Albertans.”

The program will include a recitation from the Holy Quran, and Members of the Legislative Assembly will be in attendance, as well as individuals from local Islamic organizations, including:

  • Ms. Yasmeen Nizam, Chair, Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities
  • Ms. Nilam Jetha, President, His Highness the Aga Khan Ismaili Council for Edmonton
  • Sheikh Nabil Ahmed Awan, Imam, Ithna-Asheri Shia Islamic Association, Edmonton
  • Mr. Mohamed Awada, National Council of Canadian Muslims

The event is open for the public to attend in person and will also be streamed live on Assembly Online and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta social media channels.
