Committees of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta are an important part of the legislative process in Alberta’s parliamentary democracy.

Committees allow for an in-depth review of issues and permit public and stakeholder input into the legislative process through written submissions and hearings.

The basis for the mandate and powers for each standing committee is set out in the Standing Orders. A government motion often sets the mandate for select special committees.

A committee is the master of its own proceedings, but its activities must remain within an established scope of business outlined in the Standing Orders.
